Pineapple Dump Cake Is the Retro Dessert We Can't Get Enough Of
For many of us in the BHG Test Kitchen, there's something really nostalgic about desserts that start with a can of pineapple. As soon as I tried this pineapple dump cake recipe, I was transported back to dinners at my grandma's house in Illinois. The combination of the juicy fruit and crisp topping is what makes this retro dessert so delicious. A little extra brown sugar helps echo the flavors of a classic pineapple upside down cake. Here's how to make our easy pineapple dump cake.
What Is a Dump Cake?
A dump cake is an easy dessert that doesn't require any mixing bowls or spoons. It's assembled by layering canned pie filling or fruit, cake mix, and butter into a baking dish. Once baked, the finished dessert is more similar to a cobbler than a classic cake.
Ingredients
-
Nonstick cooking spray
-
2 (20-ounce) cans crushed pineapple in juice (undrained)
-
1 package white or yellow cake mix
-
1 cup pecan halves
-
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
-
3/4 cup salted butter, cut into thin slices
-
Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional)
Directions
-
Assemble Cake
Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat a 3-qt. baking dish with cooking spray. Pour the crushed pineapple into the bottom of prepared pan. Sprinkle with cake mix, pecans, and brown sugar. Arrange butter slices evenly over layers in pan.
-
Bake and Serve
Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, 45 to 50 minutes. Cool slightly. Serve warm topped with ice cream or whipped cream, if you like.
